Baird is the Callahan County seat, about 20 miles east of Abilene on I-20. It was founded in 1880 and named for Matthew Baird, a director of the Texas and Pacific Railway. The old railway depot is now a visitor center and transportation museum, and in 1993 the Texas Legislature named Baird the Antique Capital of West Texas. The 2020 census counted 1,479 people.

Old buildings and old stock have their own pests. Antique shops and storage rooms full of paper, fabric and wood draw silverfish, mice and termites.

Older buildings

Older homes and downtown buildings have gaps in the foundation, wood close to the soil and crawl spaces. That's termite and rodent territory. A good inspection covers the crawl space and any outbuildings. See termite control and rodent control.

Shops and storage

Paper, books and fabric stored for a long time draw silverfish. Keep storage dry, use sealed bins, and check old boxes before bringing them into the house.
