Buffalo Gap is named for the natural gap in the Callahan Divide that bison herds used to pass through. It was the Taylor County seat in the early days, until the Texas and Pacific railroad bypassed it in 1881 and Abilene took over. In 1956 Ernie Wilson bought the original county courthouse and started what's now the Buffalo Gap Historic Village. The 2020 census counted 543 residents.
With hills, brush and older buildings, this is a different setting than the subdivisions in town. Expect more of the pests that come with open country.

Older homes and rural lots
Older homes have more gaps: around old plumbing, at the foundation, under doors that have settled. Scorpions and spiders use all of them. Brown recluse spiders like undisturbed storage, and Texas A&M says they're common in cluttered garages, crawl spaces and attics. See spider control.
Pier and beam houses with crawl spaces and wood close to the ground are worth a termite inspection, too. See termite control.
