Merkel is about 17 miles west of Abilene, near Interstate 20. It started around the time the Texas and Pacific Railway came through, under the name Windmill Town, and was renamed in 1881 for S. M. Merkel, the first settler in the area. The 2020 census counted 2,471 people.
