Dyess Air Force Base opened on April 15, 1956, on the site of the old Tye Army Air Field, and was named for Lt. Col. William E. Dyess of Albany, Texas. Today it's home to the 7th Bomb Wing, which flies the B-1B Lancer, and the 317th, which flies C-130J aircraft.
That means a steady flow of families moving to Abilene from all over. A lot of them meet their first Texas scorpion in the first summer.
