Wylie started as a farm community southwest of town, named for J. J. Wylie, who settled in Taylor County in 1880. As Abilene grew, it turned into a bedroom community, and a big part of it now sits inside the city limits along FM 89, better known as Buffalo Gap Road. Wylie ISD still gives the area its own identity, and its campuses are all inside Abilene.
Much of the south side was rural not that long ago. That's great for yards and not so great for keeping wildlife out. The scorpions, crickets and ants that lived there before the houses are still around.

What south side callers usually see
Scorpions in bathtubs and on walls in summer. Crickets piled at the garage door in the fall. Fire ant mounds in new sod. Roaches coming up from the drains after a hard rain. Newer slab homes still get termites, especially once the builder's pretreatment ages.
Quick fixes before you call
Walk the outside at dusk. Check door sweeps and garage door seals for light, pull rock borders and firewood back from the slab, and swap bright porch bulbs for yellow ones during cricket season. Tell us whether your lot backs up to open land.
