Tye got its name around 1900, when the Texas and Pacific Railroad held a contest to name stops along its line. The winning name honored John P. Tye, a Methodist minister and the first postmaster. The 2020 census counted 1,176 residents.
Dyess Air Force Base was built on the old Tye Army Air Field, so the town and the base are neighbors. The bug list here is the same as in town.
