Abilene's weather swings hard. The National Weather Service office in San Angelo puts normal yearly rain at 25.24 inches. In 2023 the city had 66 days at 100 degrees or hotter, compared to a normal of 12. That year's last spring freeze was March 19 and the first fall freeze was October 31. Pests follow those swings.

Spring

Warm days wake everything up. Subterranean termites swarm, usually on warm days after the weather settles. Ants rebuild mounds. Paper wasps start small nests under eaves and porch ceilings. This is the time to knock down new nests while they're tiny and to get a termite inspection if you haven't had one.

Summer

Heat and dry spells send bugs looking for water and shade. Scorpions come out of hot attics into living spaces, according to Texas A&M. Roaches head for drains, sinks and water heaters. After a storm, mosquitoes breed in anything holding water. Keep the scorpion checklist close.

Late summer and fall

Cricket season. AgriLife says field crickets peak in August and September, especially when a summer drought breaks with rain and cooler weather. Turn off unneeded lights. Once nights cool, mice start looking for a way in. See cricket control and rodent control.

Winter

Outside gets quiet, but indoor pests don't stop. German roaches, mice, bed bugs and silverfish keep going. Winter is a good time to seal gaps, fix door sweeps and clean out the garage before spring.

Questions people ask us

Does a hard freeze kill bugs?

It slows outdoor pests down. Bugs inside the house or deep in the ground ride it out.
