What Attracts Cockroaches to Your Abilene Home
Call Abilene Pest Control
- Scorpions, termites, roaches, ants, spiders, bed bugs and more
- Abilene, Wylie, Potosi, Tye, Clyde, Merkel and around
- A licensed local company quotes the job in person
Roaches need three things: water, food and a tight place to hide. Take away any of them and the house gets a lot less attractive.
Water
In a hot, dry Abilene summer, water is the big draw. A slow drip under the sink, condensation on pipes, a leaky water heater pan or a wet bath mat is enough. Outdoor roaches come in looking for moisture when it's hot, and German roaches inside cluster around kitchens and bathrooms for the same reason.
- Fix drips under sinks and at the water heater
- Dry out the shower and tub at night
- Don't leave pet water bowls out overnight if roaches are active
Food
Crumbs, grease on the stovetop, open cereal boxes, pet food, dirty dishes and trash all feed roaches. Wipe counters every night, take trash out, and store food in sealed containers.

Hiding spots
Roaches like tight, warm, dark gaps. Behind the fridge, under the dishwasher, in cabinet hinges and inside stacks of cardboard and paper bags. Cardboard boxes from stores or storage can bring roaches in with them. Unpack and recycle quickly.
Ways in
Gaps under doors, around pipes and through weep holes let outdoor roaches walk right in. Door sweeps and sealing help a lot. If you're seeing small roaches in daylight, it's past prevention. See roach control.
Questions people ask us
Do roaches mean my house is dirty?
- No. Clean homes get roaches too, especially in summer. But food and water left out make it easier for them to stay.
