Most ant problems have a source you can find. Follow the trail, figure out what they're after, and treat the colony instead of the line of workers.
Follow the trail
Watch where the ants go. One end is food or water. The other end is how they got in: a crack in the slab, a gap at the window, a pipe under the sink, a flower bed outside. That entry spot is where to focus.
Bait, don't spray
Sprays kill the workers you see, but the colony makes more. Baits let workers carry food back to the nest. Put bait near the trail and leave the ants alone while they take it. It can take several days. Spraying near the bait ruins it.
- Clean up the food source first, then bait
- Leave the trail alone while bait works
- Seal the entry gap after the ants are gone
- Trim plants touching the house

Fire ants
Fire ants have been spreading across West Texas, and Callahan County next door is in the state's fire ant quarantine. Treating one mound at a time pushes them around. A yard-wide bait followed by treating active mounds usually works better. Apply bait when ants are foraging, not before rain or on a cold morning.
When to call
If ants keep coming back, show up in several rooms, or you see big ants with sawdust, call. See ant control.
